Alice in goddamned Wonderland!

I've just spent the past hour looking for illustrations from an edition of Alice in Wonderland I used to have, with no joy.  I thought I had it when I came across something in Google images, but it was just the cover...and no info about who the illustator was or anything.  ANNOYING!  I want to get this particular image of Alice falling down the rabbit hole, followed by her landing...but apparently this book does not exist.  Monkey fuckers!  I want creepy Alice!!!

My new haircut...

Just thought I'd post these here.  I've not had enough sleep, so I look kinda meh.  They're not the most flattering photos in the world, but you can sort of see my hair...

Entry text? WTF?

I am just one huge ball of I DON'T UNDERSTAND right now.  I've been trying to post something on lj to a community for a day and a half now, and it's driving me nuts.  I copy and paste from a Word document, and everything looks happy and dandy until I click to post.  At which point an annoying little message telling me an entry text is required pops up, and all my text is gone.  WTF??  Whyyyyyy???!!!  Gah!

Meme, there are 20 questions, lj formatting is driving me nuuuuuts...

I fucked up with the formatting...

Ok, here goes:

1. You have 50 dollars in your pocket what do you do with it?
That’s what - £25?  Right now I’m thinking a long lunch, but that may be because there’s nothing to eat in my house!  I'd probably buy lunch for a  mate as well, but with £25 I reckon  we wouldn't be able to get more than a couple pub lunches...

2. What is your most guilty pleasure?
Reading/writing VM fic, especially when I’m meant to be doing something else.  Usually that something else is work…shhh!

3. Have you ever seen someone die?
No, but I’ve watched a live autopsy at the morgue.

4. Where did you go on your last vacation?
Just got back today – Les Gets in the French alps.  Best holiday ever.

5. Where do you see yourself in five years?
Paris.  The centre of the universe, as far as I’m concerned.

6. If you could be any fictional character, who would it be?
Veronica Mars.  I'd kick so much ass...  I also wouldn't say no to being Betty Cooper from the Archie comics either... ;-)

7. If you could live in any other historical time, what would it be?
Pre-revolutionary France, particularly Paris.  The salons, the art…just as long as I was well out of there by the time the Revolution came around!

8. Do you have a favorite saying?
Christ on a bike.  Are those my feet?  Not alays used together, but sometimes…

9. Is there anything that has made you unhappy recently?
Nothing, absolutely nothing at all.  I’m happy as a kitten swimming in a sea of ham.  Mmm…ham…

10. What do you want most in life?
A decent spaghetti carbonara.  Other than that, good friends and things to laugh about.

11. Which of the 7 Deadly Sins do you think you relate to the most?
12. Do you believe there is only one person for everyone (romantically speaking)?
No – but I used to.

13. Who is currently the most important person to you?
My mother.  She's small, cute, and most of the time she smells nice.

14. What kind of person do you think you are?
Nostalgic and loyal.  Trust me, it makes sense.

15. Do you believe there is nothing higher than human kind?
What, in the animal kingdom?  As for God and co, I'm a firm disbeliever.

16. Which fictional character could you most see yourself marrying?
Mmm...Logan... ;-)  Or maybe Agent Booth of Bones.  *drool*

17. Would you give your all in a relationship?
Ooh, there's a landmine question if I ever saw one!  I'd like to think yes, but those who know me well would probably disagree.  Hell, my exes would probably disagree!

18. What was the last movie you saw in theaters?
"A cock and bull story".  No, seriously - I don't go to the cinema very often.  I seem to remember seeing the Simpsons Movie with Jak last year, but that may have been my imagination!

19. What type of friends do you like?
The low-maintenance kind.  Which is kinda odd that 2 of my best friends are pretty damned high maintenance!  Love them anyways though...Other than that, anyone who welcomes hilarity into their everyday lives (and likes to inject some of the bizarre into the mundane). I love a good giggle...

20. Do you have an all time favorite song?
"The Only Time" (NIN), or anything off The Tea Party's first album.  Oh, and Israel K's "Somewhere over the rainbow", which is just beautiful...

I must be needing sleep

So I got 2 tickets for BoB.  And I made a loud 'squee'ing' sound, for many many hours.  And I gave one to Roz ([info]afrocurl), and there were more similar sentiments all around.  Well then I got the bright idea (roughly around the time I should have been packing for my holiday, for which i will be leaving in about SIX HOURS) to get a ticket for my friend Jak, who I just started getting into VM recently.  Of course I knew she wouldn't be as hyper about it as I'll be, but I was feeling kinda nutty.  Was going to be a surprise, but...

Well, I got the ticket (number 3 in about 16 hours), but I've kind of decided to give it to someone who knows what I'm talking about instead.  Though right now I don't even know what the hell I'm on about.

Anyways, ticket number 3 went to [info]fickledame.  And now I'm getting myself to sleep, so I can get to the airport for 6AM!

Gnight folks!

Owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

I CAN'T GET MY CORSET OFFFFFFFFF!!!

For those of you who care, this is what it looked like.  Well, still looks like.  Only I had less of a pained look on my face than I do now.  That's me on the right, my friend Louise on the left.

And my amazing eye makeup, courtesy of the lovely Sarah Cairncross.  I look naked but I'm not.  Blame the corset!  I just took these a second ago, so my makeup isn't as pristine as it was at 7pm.

Now I'm off to bed, potentially in my actual corset.

FUCKING OUCH.

Oh, and one more photo of my makeup.

Question for the Americans (actual questions, honest!)

I have a few question for all you Americans - it's for something I'm writing, and I wanted to get a few facts straight.

1. In your sophomore year of college/uni, what sorts of classes do you have to take?  Do you have to take a science and an English class, for example, or can you pick and choose anything you like?
2. When do midterms happen?  Is it around Thanksgiving, or in January?
3. When you rent a car, do you need to be a certain age?  Do you need to have ID?  What if you offered to pay in cash?

Beta? Just a wee 'un?

Anyone willing to have a look at a wee post-finale one-shot?  I'm writing from the POV of a character I actually hate, and it's got mentions of L/V.  It's in the form of an interrogation, and it's a little bit...different.  I'm a little concerned about the tone of it, as I'm not sure if I've got the POV's voice down.  Anyone up for doing it?  Pretty please?  ;-)

Writer's Block: Love This Artist

Who is your favorite artist?

View 169 Answers

Vermeer.  I'm a huge fan of Dutch realism, always have been.  I've always loved the symbolism behind seemingly random objects and situations, though of course all of this would have been obvious to his contemporaries.  A discarded shoe, a sleeping girl at the kitchen table?  A woman laughing at a man seemingly telling a joke?  A small dog?   A young woman the object of attention to a well-dressed man, an older, haggard woman watching on?  Man, prostitution was rife in Holland in the 1600s!  I also loved the step away from the grandiose subjects of the Baroque and Renaissance periods, of mythological and religious icons.  The presentation of the human as imperfect.

On that note, my other favourite artist is Caravaggio.  The man had serious balls, painting a dead prostitute (allegedly) as the Virgin Mary  (in "Death of the Virgin", early 1600s, Louvre) was inspired.  I think he was the first painter ever to depict the dead Virgin Mary as actually...dead...as opposed to beautific and ascending to heaven, surrounded by fanfare and adorable cherubs.  Caravaggio was dark, and I love dark.  Big on the angst and the chiaroscuro (I'm sure he was the father of the technique, though my knowledge of Art History is escaping me a bit at the moment...), and his life (fights, murder, exile) was like something from a movie.  In fact, I don't know why a film hasn't been made about the guy already.  The original bad boy.  Hmmm...

Vilhelm Hammershoi is another of my favourites.  He painted in a similar style to the Dutch Realists, but his subject matter was more to the taste of the Impressionists.  He was big on the muted colours, docile subjects.  Of course, he was a product of the 1800s, so that's not exactly a surprise.  His palette was almost monochromatic - shades of grey and white, bringing to mind a softer Whistler's mother, though his subject matter was less somber.

I have two favourite contemporary artists - both of whom I own paintings by.  The first is Jackie Anderson, a Scottish painter (I think she comes from Glasgow), who has a bit of a unique style of almost translucent-looking oils, also in the pale, grey and dusky pastel palette of a faded Hammershoi.  Her canvasses are washed with transparent hints at colour, more like watercolours than oils.  I've got "Ruth, waiting" hanging on my bedroom wall.

The other is Emma Hesse, a Canadian (Ontarian) artist who has an amazing way with light and material.  There's just a certain way sunlight filters through an open window, illuminating a nighdress, a pair of stockings, a woman sitting.  I have one of her "Slipstream" paintings hanging in my drawing room, above the fireplace.

Weeds

I just watched a couple episodes of S2 (I wasn't even aware it'd gone to a second season, as SkyOne seems to only have repeats of S1 on) and its just reminded me how good this show is.   I have MILF Money on just now.    They named their strain MILF weed!  Hee.  And that wee kid Shane is hilarious.  I like the focus on him this season as I always thought Silas was a bit emo for my liking...

I preferred the S1 version of "Little Boxes" though.  It was ever-so-slightly creepy, which was fantastic.  I adore creepy.  Anyways, S2 is just as good as S1 so far; with slightly more humour - I'm kind of waiting for the dark to kick in.  I love the partnership between Nancy and Conrad as well, though I can't help but think they should get it on - or did that happen in one of the episodes I missed?

Peter annoys me.  Why the hell is she going out with him?!  Though I found this hilarious, for some reason:
"I gave you the Armenians!"

"I gave
you the Armenians!"

Hee.

I'm going to watch a few more episodes and catch up.  Just ordered all of seasons 1 and 2 on DVD as well.  I'm all smiley - it's been ages since I was excited about a new show!

"Just because you're crazy, and we're crazy, doesn't mean we're related."  Hee.
